Between 2014 and 2050, China alone is projected to add 292 million urban dwellers (UN 2014). City growth presents development challenges that need to be guided by a robust sustainable development framework to inform strategic decision-making now and into the future. This document provides a holistic and integrated sustainable development framework for the development of liveable, economically productive, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable cities and communities in China. Guidelines for Sustainable Cities and Communities was produced in accordance with the goals of SUC and will be mainly applied to developing countries. The SUC Guidelines consist of three sections - Evaluation Criteria, Management System and Technical Guidelines. The Guidelines are applicable to both existing built cities and communities, in particular, to new urban areas and new communities in the future.
